Prevent thermal runaway, avoid dangerous battery fires
A Unique Non-Conductive Coolant Fluid by LifeSafe Technologies
Thermal runaway is one of the primary risks related to lithium-ion batteries. It is a phenomenon in which the cell enters an uncontrollable, self-heating state. It can be caused by shock, heat, over charging and degrading batteries.
This can result in ejection of gas, shrapnel and/or particulates (violent cell venting), extremely high temperatures, highly toxic smoke and fire.
tHERMAL mANAGEMENT FLUID
THE BEST preventative SOLUTION FOR
THERMAL RUNAWAY in battery packs
Introducing LifeSafe Thermal Management Fluid (TMF) - our ground-breaking, patent-pending coolant solution that prevents the deadly threat of thermal runaway by significantly reducing the transfer of heat within a battery pack. The TMF is non-toxic, non-hazardous and importantly non-corrosive, a significant leap forward in the efforts to better control battery fires and overheating in a safe and more sustainable way.
The use of lithium-ion batteries is not a new phenomenon, however, their use has increased rapidly in recent years, most notably in the technology and transport sectors in such products as phones, laptops, cordless tools, electric cars, e-scooters and e-bikes. They will soon also be used more frequently in the home as power storage systems.
With an increasing number of devices and industries around the world utilising the power and efficiency of lithium batteries, there is a need for a new approach to controlling and managing the heat build-up within a battery.
pre- and post-trauma
In the case of overheating battery packs, there are two stages of possible intervention - Pre-Trauma and Post-Trauma. Pre-trauma describes the point where overheating has taken the batteries into propagation or thermal runaway. Post-trauma describes the point where the batteries ignite and dangerous gasses are vented from the battery pack.
what is Thermal Management fluid (TMF)?
LifeSafe Technologies’ Thermal Management Fluid (TMF) is a new and unique coolant fluid designed specifically to deal with the growing issues surrounding lithium-ion battery fires.
TMF is a dielectric coolant fluid which is non-toxic, non-hazardous and importantly non-corrosive fluid with a flash point of over 225 degrees centigrade.
Most common dielectric fluids offer insulating properties measured at 299 mOmhs. LifeSafe TMF goes above and beyond the competition, measuring 999 mOmhs.
Our unique Thermal Management Fluid has been proven to significantly reduce the thermal transfer of heat within the battery pack and prevent thermal runaway from even starting.
LifeSafe TMF is capable of being utilised in pipework surrounding batteries or injected directly into the batteries themselves.
A highly effective use of TMF would be in the early prevention of electric vehicle lithium-ion battery fires. For instance, if a sensor registers a battery overheating, a direct injection of TMF can be administered to the batteries to prevent initial ignition and cease any thermal runaway.
working with world-leading partners
Tony McDonald, Head of Engineering at Xerotech, commented:
“We are incredibly pleased to have signed this partnership agreement with LifeSafe which provides the opportunity for us to use their unique fluids within large-scale battery systems and vehicle applications worldwide.”
Ed Chivers, Global Certification Director at Reaton, commented:
“We are delighted to have entered into a partnership agreement with LifeSafe following extensive testing and development and look forward to selling their innovative Pre-Trauma and Thermal Runaway Fluids as an integral part of our fire safety systems worldwide.”
What is TMF Made of?
TMF is made of a mix of components that combine to rapidly cool the core temperature of a cell below ignition point.
Most dielectric fluids are mineral-based, highly toxic and often only 30% bio-degradable, whereas TMF is 75% bio-degradable, non-toxic, non-hazardous and non-corrosive.
LifeSafe Technologies fluids are some of the most eco-friendly extinguishing solutions available.
What is thermal runaway?
Thermal Runaway is a result of an incident or trauma that occurs within the battery. It builds up a rapid energy within the battery which is then released in a form of heat causing a Exothermic reaction.
